TOP 5: Starbucks Beverages

May 3, 2017

Top 5: The new lists I will be posting about my favorite things about life on the road. This week I decided to cover a popular topic: Starbucks.

This past weekend brought me to three different airports as well as a quick jaunt up the eastern coast of Florida/Georgia in a rental car (more on that later). As I was passing through each city, I noticed that they all had one thing in common: a Starbucks on every corner.

There’s a certain comfort in knowing that you can get the same drink in virtually any city. Whether you are a Starbucks devotee who has to have their caffeine fix every morning, or just someone who stops in for a sweet treat every once in awhile while on the road (me), this list of my top 5 personal favorite Starbucks drinks is for you.

5. caramel apple spice

The Caramel Apple Spice is a hot concoction of steamed apple juice mixed with cinnamon syrup, and topped with whipped cream and caramel drizzle. At the end of January I was in New York City for work in the middle of a cold and rainy nor’easter. Long days working in Brooklyn did not allow any time for lunch breaks, so each morning my colleague and I would stop at Starbucks for breakfast and to pick up a sandwich box for lunch. On the second chilly morning, I opted for a hot one of these. The cup thawed out my frozen fingers, and drinking the steaming brew throughout the morning was like receiving a warm hug. I personally think this drink is best enjoyed during the fall and winter months when there is a chill in the air.

4. green tea frappucino

Lactose intolerant? Switch out the regular milk for soy/almond.ย Photo courtesy of

This creamy, moderately caffeinated beverage blends sweet matcha green tea with milk and ice, and is topped with whipped cream. I am obsessed with matcha and used to order this in college at the library Starbucks. We’d all meet up for group study sessions and this drink was the bright spot in what were usually very late nights. I think it even beats the organic iced almond milk matcha sold at a local Austin shop, but shh, don’t tell anyone that I said that.

3. iced white chocolate mocha

Counting calories? Swap out the whole milk for skim.

Caffeine lovers, this drink is for you. Espresso is shaken with white chocolate sauce, milk, and ice. It’s so sweet and decadent, it’s like dessert in a cup. I love that no added cream or sugar is needed, and you can start sipping the creamy cold concoction as soon as the barista hands it to you. Definitely splurge and get the whipped cream, it’s worth it.

2. chai crรจme frappucino

This drink is my new favorite, mainly because it has just a tiny amount of caffeine in it (I can’t have too much) and is so flavorful. Spicy chai is blended with milk and ice, which is then topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. I love it in Frappucino form, but you can also get it over ice if you prefer, white mocha style. I just had one of these this past weekend in the airport, and it was the perfect pick-me-up for my late flight home.

1. passion tea variations

So many variations; how to choose?

You can absolutely never go wrong with a passion tea. The fuscia-colored tea is flavored with hibiscus, lemongrass, and apple. It is completely caffeine-free and can be enjoyed in several different forms. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Cold/snowy weather? Order a hot passion tea with two packets of sweetener. Delicious as is but a splash of milk/cream can be added for richness.
  • Beach day? Get a sweetened iced passion tea, or its favorite cousin, the passion tea lemonade.
  • Counting calories/carbs? Try these options:
    • Iced, unsweetened passion tea with a pump of sugar free vanilla syrup
    • Iced, unsweetened passion tea plain or with sweetener of your choice
  • Want something fruity?ย Order a sweetened iced passion tea or passion tea lemonade with the following:
    • An added pump of raspberry syrup (my personal favorite)
    • An added pump of melon syrup
    • Added pumps of both raspberry and melon syrup

What do you think? Which Starbucks drinks make your Top 5 list? Do you agree/disagree with my choices? Looking forward to your comments!
